Apple Core Project

The Apple Core Project focuses on preservation of heritage apple trees by surveying, mapping, identifying, grafting and propagating heirloom varieties. Located in the West End of San Miguel and Montrose Counties, started in 2016 by Jennifer Nelson and Melanie Eggers. They’ve surveyed over 500 trees, identified more than 25 varieties of heritage apples and have now installed, with the help of Bodie Johansson and Dave Hodges, a Demonstration Orchard in Nucla, CO featuring more than 100 different varieties of heirloom apples from the region. The Apple Core Cider/Juice features between 5-7 varieties of local heritage apples mostly donated from orchard owners. All juice sales profits benefit the Apple Core Project’s programming.
